Some devices that are advertised as air purifiers purposely emit large amounts of ozone, the main component of smog. CARB recommends that ozone generators not be used, except for approved industrial purposes where harmful exposure to ozone is prevented. Not only are ozone generators ineffective at cleaning indoor air, but inhaling ozone poses serious health risks for humans and animals. This fact sheet discusses these health risks and provides effective, alternative solutions to address indoor air quality problems.
Air cleaners that utilize ionizers and electrostatic precipitators are other types of devices that emit ozone, but do so as a by-product of their design and function. These devices are designed to electrically charge particles in the air and cause them to attach to surfaces in the room, such as walls or floors. Ozone is released through the charging process, although these devices typically emit much less ozone than ozone generators.
Ozone generators can produce indoor ozone levels several times higher than the State's outdoor 1-hr and 8-hr health standards of 90 parts per billion (ppb) and 70 ppb respectively. Many commercial ozone generators emit more than 5,000 mg of ozone per hour of operation, which could result in unhealthy levels of ozone in indoor air.
People who buy ozone generators may not be aware that ozone can harm the cells in the lungs and respiratory airways. Exposure to ozone irritates and inflames the lining of the respiratory system. This causes symptoms including coughing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and impaired breathing. Ozone can worsen asthma symptoms, and may contribute to the development of asthma. Elevated exposures to ozone can cause permanent lung damage, and repeated exposure can even increase the risk of dying among persons already in poor health. Persons especially vulnerable to health problems from breathing ozone include children and those who already suffer from asthma or other respiratory diseases, including the elderly. There are many experimental studies on animals, including dogs, cats, hamsters and guinea pigs, that show respiratory effects from exposure to ozone. Birds are especially sensitive to the effects of air pollutants, including ozone.
The unfortunate answer is that misleading advertising by manufacturers is very effective, and no government agency has the authority to fully regulate these devices. Thus, CARB is actively working to educate professionals and the public about the dangers of using ozone generators.
CARB strongly advises against the use of ozone generators in spaces occupied by people or animals. Other governmental agencies agree with this advice. CARB provides a list of potentially hazardous ozone generators sold as "air purifiers", which is periodically updated. If an ozone generator is not on this list, it does not mean that it is safe for use.
In 2007, CARB adopted a regulation to limit ozone emissions from indoor air cleaning devices. Over 300 manufacturers have submitted test results and obtained CARB certification of their air cleaning devices as required under our regulation. Certification is based on a device's low (usually near-zero) ozone emissions and electrical safety. The following information provides the list of CARB certified air cleaning devices and additional information on how to choose a safe and effective air cleaner.
The Ozone Depleting Substances and other Halocarbons Regulation (97-132) - Clean Air Act requires that any person buying or selling ozone depleting substances must apply for and obtain a permit to buy or sell.
We have an international family of dealers that can help you. They can educate you on each model, submit your order to production and support you with service. You can contact them to get started, or use the ozone inventory system (OIS) to view their stock and upcoming shipments.
(a) Purchase, sell, offer to sale, let or allow the distribution of regulated ozone-depleting compounds (ODCs) as defined in 24-5 of Chapter 24, the Environmental Code of Miami-Dade County. Regulated ODCs include, but are not limited to, Freon (R-12 and R-22), halon and various other compounds defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as having ozone-depleting potential.
Scientists have documented that venting of these regulated ODCs results in destruction and thinning of the stratospheric ozone layer. A thinner ozone layer allows more harmful ultraviolet radiation to reach the earth's surface, resulting in a higher incidence of human cancer, cataracts and crop damage. Due to their stability and lengthy travel time to the stratosphere, these compounds can continue to damage the ozone layer long after they have been released.
This is a 2 in 1 Ozone Facial Steamer & Mag Light Combo. The steamer includes the ozone function to help steam and sterilize the face. The steamer has two switches, one to activate the power and the other to activate the ozone. This Steamer also has a timer and an automatic shut-off function when the water level gets too low. This unit is easily adjusted up and down and it is on a study caster case for easy movement around the spa. The magnifying lamp is a 5 diopter magnifying lamp. There is a 37" extendable arm making this piece fully adjustable to meet your workspace needs. The lamp and light have a protective cover for added safety. When fully extended, the lamp is 6'3" at its highest point.
With its extra oxygen atom, reactive ozone can decompose and catch polluting molecules to change their molecular composition, and negative ions can absorb tiny airborne particles to clean the air.Ozone together with negative ions can easily permeate every corner of enclosed space, thoroughly removing pollutants such as chemicals, smoke, viruses, bacteria, allergens, odor and mold, while leaving no secondary pollutants but oxygen, which is regarded as a highly eco-friendly solution for efficient sanitization.
PuriBar has the built-in ozone and negative ion generator that produces ozone and negative ions via high voltage and ionization, killing up to 99.99% of bacteria and viruses in the minimum of 4 minutes.*The data is provided by Guangdong Microbiological Experiment Report. Exposed to high concentration of ozone can be harmful. Please avoid long exposure to ozone treated space.
With fashionable design and only 100g in weight, PuriBar is ultra-easy for quick disinfection. Twist it and choose a scenario, and ozone is automatically released after 3s.*You can switch among the Handbag, Backpack, Suitcase, and Loop modes. The ozone release time in the Handbag mode (5L) is 4 min, the Backpack mode (20L) is 6 min, the Suitcase mode (30L) is 8 min, and the Loop mode is 4 min each time with a 2-hour gap.
Small and portable, PuriBar helps you remove airborne pollutants at any time you want. An enclosed unoccupied space is all it needs.*Due to the strong oxidability and sterilizability of ozone, please do not expose the product to oxidizable items for a long period of time.
Air purifiers are one of those things, like a Himalayan salt lamp, that I reflexively thought was useless bullshit for the easily scammed. I was probably getting air ionization confused with ozone generation, which the EPA says doesn't work. These processes are different. 781b155fdc
